On Sunday's in this neighborhood of Rome called Trastevere there appear, out of nowhere, huge sprawling markets - nothing like I have ever seen before. Literally hundred's of tables piled with goods from cheap lipstick to expensive antique furniture and everything in between. Shoes, tables spilling over with clothing, hats, bags, household supplies, you name it! And the merchants all yelling out prices. Everything is a buzz with activity - its great.
I went there after Mass this Sunday because I realized that I had no winter coat (who would have thought that a Canadian-made winter coat would be needed in Rome!) and I was freezing. We have gone from wearing summer frocks to burying ourselves under down comforters to stay warm over night. And there is no heating in the monastery until November 15th!! So a cheap winter coat was in order and I found just the one at Porta Portese for 10 Euros. A great wool hat to go for 5 Euros!
